This hard timber of medium density is mostly straight grained, but with wavy or curly grain occasionally present. The beautiful grain character produces more figure variation than any other wood. Color is a rich dark brown to purplish-black which develops a lustrous patina with age. This is the only dark brown wood species that is native to North America.
